Back in 2008, Nissan announced that it would introduce a diesel V6 in the U.S. market Maxima sedan right about … now. Last we checked, there are no diesel vehicles available at American Nissan dealers and no immediate plans to offer any. Unfortunately, in the time since the original announcement, we’ve had a collapse of car sales in this country and, with the cost cutting going on everywhere, Nissan has apparently decided they can’t afford to certify the new 3.0-liter V6 diesel for Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards.
Just because we aren’t getting any Nissan or Infiniti diesels in this country it doesn’t mean that the development effort has gone to waste. Nissan developed the V6 diesel with Renault and the French brand has already introduced the engine in the Laguna Coupe. Now, it is ready to debut in the Infiniti FX30d and the EX30d.
The turbocharged common-rail V6 is rated at 235 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Nissan has adapted the packaging from the transverse front wheel drive Renault for the rear/all-wheel-drive application of the Infinitis. On the EU test cycle, the FX30d is rated at 26.1 miles per gallon (U.S.) combined while the EX30d is rated at 28 mpg combined.
